Dermal fillers are a popular non-surgical treatment used to restore volume, smooth lines, and enhance facial contours. At Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor, we use hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers, a naturally occurring substance found in the body, to achieve subtle, natural-looking results.

With over 50,000 treatments performed, Dr Bart brings over a decade of experience to deliver results that support your features — never change them.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels designed to gently restore lost volume, smooth fine lines, or enhance features such as the lips and cheeks. The hyaluronic acid in these fillers helps attract moisture, giving the skin a hydrated and youthful appearance.

Treatment is quick, tailored to your facial anatomy, and designed for natural movement and harmony.

Areas Commonly Treated:

  • Lips – Add volume or subtle definition
  • Cheeks – Lift and contour mid-face
  • Nasolabial Folds – Soften smile lines
  • Marionette Lines – Reduce downturned corners of the mouth
  • Jawline – Improve definition
  • Chin – Enhance projection or shape
  • Under Eyes (Tear Troughs) – Refresh tired-looking eyes (case selection important)

How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

Results are visible immediately and typically last between 6–18 months, depending on the area and product used. Regular maintenance can support longer-term results and gradual improvements.

What to Expect After Treatment?

Some mild swelling or redness may occur — this usually settles within 24–72 hours. Occasional bruising is possible, especially around the lips or under the eyes. Most people resume normal activities the same day.

Are Dermal Fillers Safe?

When performed by an experienced medical professional, dermal fillers are considered safe. However, as with all medical treatments, side effects and risks exist and are fully discussed during your consultation. These may include:

  • Temporary swelling or bruising
  • Tenderness at the injection site
  • Lumps or asymmetry (usually resolves or can be adjusted)
  • Rare complications such as vascular occlusion

Your safety and outcome are our top priorities. Every treatment is performed by Dr Bart Scanlon with precision and care, using sterile technique and anatomical expertise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dermal fillers are made up of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. Dermal filler also contains lidocaine which is an anaesthetic to make it comfortable when being injected into the skin. Dermal filler (hyaluronic acid) is responsible for attracting and holding water within the skin. This allows the skin to become full and rejuvenated. Over time our body metabolises hyaluronic acid causing the skin to look aged. This is due to the loss of firmness and lifting within the face. Sunken and sagging skin are the key features of ageing which cause the loss in volume. Dermal filler (hyaluronic acid) is the most common procedure to correct this problem with typically little downtime and a fraction of the cost compared with either a fat transfer into the face or a facelift.

Yes, most people are good candidates for dermal filler treatment. There is no judgement or expectations to have treatment from our clinic.

Doctor Bart has performed over 30,000 dermal filler treatments, making our resident doctor one of the most experienced doctors within the country, let alone the world when it comes to dermal filler procedures.

We will not recommend or treat an area if we do not think it will meet an individual’s expectations.

Only clients with contraindications are not candidates. Contraindications include:

  • Pregnancy or breast feeding
(absolute contraindication for all treatments in clinic until breast feeding has stopped)
  • Previous allergic reaction
(Please discuss with doctor, although having an allergy is extremely rare)
  • Immunocompromised
(will require background and medical history before treatment, sometimes will require treating specialist to ok procedure prior to doing so)
  • Signs of skin infection
  • Systemically unwell patient
  • Under the age of 18 years
  • Patients without authorisation from their treating specialists in certain medical conditions
  • Doctor believes you will not be suitable for treatment
  • Doctor believes it is unsafe to treat the patient
  • Doctor believes the treatment will not meet the patient’s expectations

Each individual is assessed on their current medical situation by a doctor not a nurse.

Initially during the consultation, you can discuss with the doctor dermal filler treatment options and outcomes.

Consent is maintained.

If you would like treatment during the consultation this can be done.

Depending on the area and the facial structure a needle or cannula may be used.

Lip filler injections are typically the most painful, lip injections require prescription grade numbing cream, very few people require a dental block of the lips. However, both are available and can be performed at all times.

All other dermal filler treatments are tolerable without numbing cream or local anaesthetic prior to treatment. The dermal filler itself has lidocaine (numbing agent) within the gel making them very comfortable considering a needle is being place under your skin.

Dermal filler treatment takes between 15 - 30 mins.

After the injections are completed, the doctor will discuss aftercare and how to contact the clinic if you have any questions or concerns.

We offer free follow up appointments on all treatments within the clinic, however extra product may incur a cost to the patient at follow up.

Results are variable amongst all patients however the doctor will not perform the treatment if the doctor believes it will not meet the patient’s expectations.

However, there is always a possibility of bruises and lumps due to needles injected into the face. Although this is rare, it is more likely to happen during tear trough treatments. Lip treatments also have an increased risk of bruising compared to other dermal filler treatment areas.

Treatments are typically not noticeable to a stranger after injections however, results will improve over 2 - 4 weeks post treatment.

We offer free follow ups to all patients treated within the clinic, with an experienced doctor.

Our aim is to exceed expectations, the reason for this is that our doctor has performed over 80.000 cosmetic injectable treatments. It is only one doctor, not multiple injectors that are not doctors with little qualifications and experience. Seeing the one experienced doctor, helps with continuity of care and continued treatment.

All dermal filler treatments contain risk.

At Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor we have experienced injectors.

Our doctor has performed over 5,000 cosmetic injectable treatments each year since 2016.

We offer a free follow up appointment to all patients at any time, if we have performed the treatment.

All dermal filler treatments are reversible within the clinic with a product named hyaluronidase which is always available in the clinic. Doctor Bart is experienced with using this product for treating complications.

We offer treatment of adverse outcomes and complications from other clinics at a cost incurred to patient.

Most common adverse effects include:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Unevenness
  • Asymmetry
  • Localised pain

Rare complications include:

  • Allergic / hypersensitivity reaction
  • Infection
  • Vascular occlusion
  • Granulomas
  • Rare systemic illness

Very rare:

  • Blindness to one eye from dermal filler
(1 case in Australia, injection performed by nurse)

We recommend waiting two weeks before reviewing dermal filler treatments.

This allows the dermal filler to integrate with the soft tissues of the face and gives time for swelling to settle. Although best results are typically seen after 4 weeks.

However, if you have concerns, please contact the clinic. We are happy to help and want to be aware of any situation that is concerning to our patients.

No questions are silly, we understand it could be your first time having a cosmetic treatment done.

If you have any concerns with the outcome of your treatment, please book in your follow up appointment with the Doctor for a review by phone 1300 282 410 or Facebook messenger.
