Morning Walks, Bagels, and the Best Kind of Connection

August 15, 2025

One of my favourite parts of fatherhood right now is taking the twins, Trudy and Johnny, for their morning walks when I’m in Bangkok. We take turns, one day it’s Trudy’s turn to go first, the next day Johnny’s. Each walk is about an hour, just wandering through the streets as the city wakes up. We stop for a bagel together, sit for a moment, and watch the world go by.

Both of them are just starting to discover language, learning names and sounds. And there’s this incredible moment that happens every now and then, when they suddenly look up, eyes bright, and say “Dad.” It’s simple, but it’s everything.

With Trudy, it’s the same magic. We chat in our own little way as we walk, pointing out people, dogs, and passing tuk-tuks. With Johnny, it’s often quieter, he takes in the world with curiosity, and every so often he’ll grin and say “Dad” like it’s the most natural thing in the world.

These mornings aren’t about the bagels or the route we take. They’re about connection. Saying hello to people we pass, sharing smiles, soaking up the peaceful energy of Bangkok before the day gets busy, and just being present together.

I spend part of my time in Australia working at Newcastle Cosmetic Doctor, helping patients feel confident and cared for. But these mornings with Trudy and Johnny remind me why I do what I do, life’s real beauty is in connection, kindness, and the moments you can’t buy.

Much love,
