Anti – wrinkle treatment: What is it and what is it used for?

Botulism toxin is a prescription medicine, that is prescribed and injected by a trained Doctor. The botulism toxin is injected into muscles, to improve the appearance of moderate to severe lines.

Botulism toxin remains the single most popular treatment in Australia to prevent overworking of facial muscles which create and deepen fine lines and wrinkles.
It is also used for many of medical conditions such as migraines, excessive sweating, and muscle spasm.

Treatment areas include:

  • Frown lines  (creases between the eyebrows)
  • Forehead lines (perpendicular lines across forehead)
  • Crows feet (creases on the outside of eyes)
  • Eyebrow lift (corner tip of eyebrows)

  • It is contraindicated if you are pregnant (or planning to be pregnant) and or breast feeding.

  • Patients must be over the age of 18, if requested must show identification.

  • Any medical conditions and medications must be disclosed on consultation.

  • If you have had a previous allergy or adverse effects from botulism toxin, please make the doctor aware.

  • All make up must be removed before treatment to minimise infection risk.

  • Please do not work out prior to treatment on the day, or post treatment.

  • Please avoid aspirin and ibuprofen the 7 days leading up to the day of treatment as this can increase the risk of bruising.

  • Please avoid caffeine intake the day of treatment as this will reduce the risk of bruising.

  • If you have a needle phobia or have fainted when having an injection in the past please make the doctor aware.

Botulism toxin temporarily reduces the appearance of lines by relaxing the muscle activity and so the treatment will need to be carried out every 3-4 months depending on the degree of concern and patient preference.

Increased metabolism, increased activity, the muscle size, gender, dieting, exercise, stress, sunburn, some facial treatments and certain medications.

The majority of patients will encounter minimal to no downtime.

Rarely there is mild swelling and redness from the injections, but this will subside within 1 hour post treatment.

Bruising is unlikely but may occur, if it does happen its usually very minimal, which is easy covered with makeup (1 hour post treatment).
